Another Place in Time

Hi,
Some artists actually get so involved with their paint that they have been known to eat it. Luckily, I'm not there yet!
Color is, however, a primary focus of mine when I create a painting.
You'll also find that I am not a photo realist. I paint in a very loose representational style that focuses more on capturing the essence of my subjects rather than capturing geometries with exacting accuracy.
So, if something seems out of proportion it was done with intention in order to better express the underlying nature of my subjects.
There's also an inherent child-like playfulness that runs through all of my work. That's because I enjoy the whimsy you can find in art as well as the unhindered, raw work of children. They paint from within. Their paintings have pure soul, purity, and a freedom that is most beautiful to find.
I generally will paint with oil as well as acrylic. In addition to brushes, I sometimes enjoy the use of pallet knives. Hands are also good. As one artist friend suggested, it is what God used. I also paint a variety of subjects in genres ranging from very loose representational artwork to abstract paintings.
So, you'll find me constantly mixing and matching mediums, genres, implements, and techniques with an eye toward assembling the right combination that best captures the essence of my subjects.

Hi,
Mixed media has a special place in my heart.
I have always enjoyed a variety of paint as well as all kinds of interesting photos, objects, etc, which can be combined in a work to create a beautiful piece of art.
While in college, I once decided to make a painting out of cereal. The texture was amazing. What I didn't know or think about at that young age was what would happen to food in a painting.
My most recent mixed media pieces are the pill abstracts.
Over the years, I had managed to collect a huge container of pills. The different colors, shapes and sizes are just beautiful.
So, I decided what better than to recycle, reuse, and recreate. They are completed with an epoxy seal.

Hi,
My handcrafted prints are created on archival materials that are made to stand the test of time.
Each print is unique.. Included in the collection are monoprints, watercolor monoprints, drypoint, and copperplate etchings. Each is also a one-of-a-kind limited edition.
The uniqueness of each piece stems from the handcrafted nature of the printing process.
This process begins by creating a plate. The image can be etched into copper, linoleum, lexan, or another similar surface. Then, dependent on the process selected, the plate is hand-painted.
Next, the substrate ( paper) is soaked, towel damped, placed onto the painted plate on the press bed under a layer of blankets, and rolled through the printing press at high pressure. In this way, the paint on the plate is transferred to the archival substrate and one unique print is created.
To make another, the plate must be cleaned and the entire process repeated. Since each print is individually hand painted and processed, each print is different than the next.
As a final step, I hand-sign and number each print to certify its provenance and uniqueness.

Hi,
I am often asked two questions about my oil and cold wax paintings:
- "What is an oil and cold wax painting?"
- "And how to you make one? What is the process like?"
You might say that the process of creating oil and cold wax paintings requires a great deal of patience, concentration, and mindfulness. For me, that is a lot of what creating art is all about.
Yet for some reason I find the oil and cold wax process is especially amazing! I love the playfulness of mixing and layering paint color upon paint color until my composition begins to evolve.
The process begins with mixing oil and cold wax in just the right proportions. This mixture is then layered onto a solid substrate using a variety of tools. Generally I begin with one solid color.
Next, patience becomes a key component of the process. I am forced to wait patiently after I apply each layer for the exact moment when I'm able to place the next layer of color.
The next layer of paint and oil cannot go onto wet paint. At the same time, you do not want it to be too dry. It needs to be in the goldilocks zone where it's "just right".
I repeat this process over and over until I begin to work my composition. Along the way I may choose to add texture by scraping, impressing or gouging away.
Then, depending upon what I see, I'll add more layers and possibly scrape, impress, and gouge some more. This provides me the opportunity to "find" colors from below to bring to the surface.
This process is repeated numerous times until the painting begins to sing!
